In this second lesson on the 1850s the nation has reached the point where compromise over slavery and territorial expansion appears (in part due to the Dred Scott decision) impossible and sectional violence has begun to erupt, in “Bleeding Kansas”, at Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia and even on the floor of the United States Senate.
